Ambiance Congo: January 1, 2012

Happy New Year!
This program, broadcast on New Year's day, 2012 marks the beginning of the seventh year for Ambiance Congo on WRIR in Richmond, Virginia USA. We start off with an appropriate song, requested by our friend Shad (aka Soukousman), called 7 ANS by Sec Bidens.
Your requests for music by Master Mwana Congo, Youlou Mabiala, Viva La Musica, Lubumbashi Stars and more add to the variety and quality of today's selections. Many thanks to everyone who requested songs for the show!
Just for fun and to illustrate how much variety and quality there is to be found in Congolese music, I've thrown in three very different songs with the same title.
Here are some album covers from the first program of 2012.
You are invited to download the program here:
That link will be good for two weeks, but the program is also available in the Ambiance Congo Audio Archives at:
Here's the track list. Happy listening! Your comments and requests are always welcome.

  1. Thank you David for this wonderful episode. Thank you for playing my request - may we have a Lubumbashi Stars song on every show? Apurva from Pune, India.

  2. Apurva, I only have two Lubumbashi Stars albums, so that might be difficult!:) I will have to ask my friend Paul about that. He is from Lubumbashi and, if we are fortunate, he may be able to help.
Thanks for your comment and for your request.

Magnificent stuff, a fine show indeed. The Mangelepa song was a real treat - is the rest of the LP as good? With a title like that it's got to be worth playing some more of. Oh, and thanks for the picture of Felix in his hat on the cover of Yo Nani - I bet he was dying to wear that somewhere! I imagine it's gathering dust at the bottom of his wardrobe again now.

  4. Glad you enjoyed, Dave.
    Thanks for your comment!
As far as Mangelepa is concerned, they're gold in my book.
Weazekwa's hat? I wonder what gloves he wore that time around?
    :)

  7. Not too late!
The program is in the Ambiance Congo Audio Archives. Look that in the "LInks" column. You'll find progams dating back to 2005.
