Ambiance Congo: March 11, 2012

WELCOME!
This Sunday's program was aired during WRIR's 2012 Spring Fund Drive.
WRIR is all volunteer, strictly not-for-profit radio.
To all of you who did donate to support this support this program and others that you like on WRIR, thank you! To those who are thinking about it, go ahead! It's easy at www.wrir.org. Buy yourself the small gift of getting to hear these programs that so many of you download and, I hope, enjoy. The drive is over but we can always use an extra $5. $10, $50 towards equipment maintenance or rent. And thank you, as well!
Enough of that.
Even with the fund-drive chat, we managed to get you 14 great songs in two hours. including a number of your much-appreciated requests.
Here are some album covers so you can see what kind of variety is offered here, including one sleeve with the youngest photos of Papa Noel and the late Nino Malapet I've seen.
I love the Wenges today, but don't you miss the days when Wenge Musica sounded and looked like that?
For the next two weeks, the program is available here:
But, thanks to Radio4all .net, it's also here alnong with many other editions of Ambiance Congo:

David, thanks for another smorgasbord of Congolese offerings. I loved the Wella Wella 45 - that must be the most insane deployment of a synth in (old) Congolese music that I've ever heard. Did they do many more as mad as that?
Good to see the fund-raising met target. In the UK the BBC's radio service has an expenditure in excess of $1 billion per annum yet, despite their vast resources and output, their World music content is resolutely underwhelming. I was wondering, do wrir run any courses on how to provide entertaining radio on a shoestring that the BBC could send their execs on?

  2. Thanks to you, Dave for listening and for your always thoughtful comments. There's a 1980s Lita Bembo solo album you MUST hear if think that synth was wild...I know you stressed the word OLD, but still.
I sent a link to our (volunteer) World Music Manager. I'm sure he will and the rest of the Board will enjoy seeing your BBC/WRIR comment.
This is one of the reasons independant radio is so very cool. We don't have to provide corporately decided programming to a coporately identified audience.
Independant radio like WRIR is pretty much a labor of love to provide people with the opportunity to hear differing and/or different opinions, experience cultural diversity and more.

I think I've just heard the Lita Bembo record that you're referring to - Conflit. After hearing it I don't know who's more unhinged, the guy playing his theremin solo or Lita Bembo for hearing it and, presumably, thinking "Yeah, that rocks". Bizarrely, though, it sort of works. Certainly not one to forget.

  5. Dave, you're right. It is the Conflit album. I have to say that I personally love that album.
You can see the sleeve here:

I think the quirky synth or theramin as you say (lol) has a lot in common with the quirky just-off-key horns in the Kiyika/Kara de Kinshasa album... which I also love.

  6. Apurva! You are THE MAN for requesting that great song. Lovely, lovely selection from a gentleman who knows his music!

David, thanks for the link to the Conflit album cover - he's got a real "where did it all go wrong" look about it him on that one.
I managed to download that Kara LP from the Globalgroove site before it got disrupted and couldn't believe my ears. It sounds like the horn section were so excited about using Nigel Tufnel's amps (the ones that go to eleven) that they completely overlooked tuning the horns. Joyous stuff.

  8. Now you got one person I have been discovering which is Dona Mobeti. I have been checking out his music lately and I hate that he has been underapperciated for his imput. He has a great voice and there are so few of music known to people which is so absurd because this man has made some incredible music. In fact, I am facebook friends with Dona Mobeti himself. He even told me info about one of his classic songs. I just wish more of his music would be exposed. Thanks for putting Dona Mobeti. He had a good voice just like a Papa Wemba.

David, how about something from the mighty Orchestre Sinza for the March 25th show. Or something from the magnificent Kin Nostalgie CD. Or anything with noisy guitars, really.
