Ambiance Congo: August 11, 2013

EDITIONS VEVE
Welcome to another edition of Ambiance Congo. Last time, I presented to you a whole two hour program devoted to 45 rpm singles, compilations of singles on LP and CD and even a couple of modern maxi-singles. I did not include ANY singles on the VEVE label and that was an omission I hope to atone for this time around!
Today, we have all songs, not always singles but all songs, written, performed, recorded, pressed or produced by Kiamuangana Mateta, a.k.a. Verckys , on his Editions VEVE International label.
When I think of Editions VEVE, the first song which comes into my head is TOKOSENGA NA NZAMBE by Orchestre Les Grands Maquisards, sung by Ntesa Dalienst. It's a true classic masterpiece and a signature piece of its era, and Verckys produced it and countless others of similar quality, danceability and beauty.
As a saxophonist, Verckys had a style all his own that was emulated by others. Just listen to the great sax on MAYALA LELE from  Michel Boyibanda's EBUKA SYSTEM's LP and you'll hear what I mean! If you know for sure who played guitar on that album, please let me know.
It was difficult to find a number of VEVE album covers I have not posted on this blog before. The music presented on that label is so consistently good that I've played songs from a lot of the records here today before.
Comments and requests are always welcome!

  1. Good show David, many thanks for compiling it. No surprise to see Lassissi Presente in the set list! (Incidentally it's just been re-posted on Globalgroove - what a treat.)
I just read some stuff about the Lassissi Presente series that you wrote a few years ago and I'm puzzled as to who Jean Baron was (is?). Is that LP any good? All the Lassissi LPs I've heard are absolutey superb - the Celi Bittsu one is a scorcher.
I'm loving that Lita Bembo LP, by the way. I wonder if Roland Dechamps ever did any albums on his own? Imagine how great they'd be.

  2. Hi Dave. Haven't seen the album at Global Groove. It's a great album, though the song titles aren't always correct. I played the A1 song marked Dribling ya Somo on the program once before only to realize later that the song was improperly named.
Jean Baron -don't know if he'still around or not- made a name for himself as a soukous artist. If I recall correctly, t's a good album. I'll play something from it for you next time. Dally Kimoko & Diblo Diabala play guitars, other singers include Mav Cacharel and Aurlus Mabele.
