Welcome!

This past week has been a very festive and very busy time for me, and I knew I'd have to put together a program on site and on air with no preparation. Thanks to requests and suggestions from forum members at Vibes D'Afrique and Africambiance (please visit them via links on this page), I was able to present a wonderful line up of songs for your enjoyment as well as my own! I asked for help with ideas for a celebration and our friends came through with flying colors. I plan to play the copy of this mix at home tomorrow as I celebrate my 58th birthday, so my sincere thanks go out to to everyone who helped out!

Happy New Year!
This program, broadcast on New Year's day, 2012 marks the beginning of the seventh year for Ambiance Congo on WRIR in Richmond, Virginia USA. We start off with an appropriate song, requested by our friend Shad (aka Soukousman), called 7 ANS by Sec Bidens.
Your requests for music by Master Mwana Congo, Youlou Mabiala, Viva La Musica, Lubumbashi Stars and more add to the variety and quality of today's selections. Many thanks to everyone who requested songs for the show!

Thanks to violent winds and torrential rain, electrical power and internet service have been unavailable to me for a few days. All has been restored now so here is the post for last week's program.

WELCOME!
Recent trends and fashions in Congolese music have led to a lot of commentary about how bad these trends and fashions have been. The guitar-led sebene has been a rare element in new music, a lot of new albums are filled with yawn-inducing ballads and songs with incomprehensible tempo changes, noisy atalaku calls and growling, mabanga-filled lyrics. These are all valid complaints, but not all new music should be readily dismissed and there are, in fact, quite a number of good songs and good albums being made.
On today's progam, I've tried to present for you some examples of the good new songs out there on the Congo music scene, songs produced in the last year or two. For variety and comparison, the show starts and ends with some older tracks, most presented originally some ten to twenty years ago.

The program two weeks ago was presented during the final hours of our fund drive (WRIR is a non-profit community radio station staffed by about 150 volunteers) and the show was chock full of talk about that. More than half of the program was talking points and recognition of donors. It was a good show, but I did not feel it was a good enough program to post out of context.

Many apologies for the delay in posting the program. The hurricane that struck here last week pretty much destroyed the power grid and konocked out much internet service.

I have finally gotten an opportunity to take a break from work and from the chainsaw (storm cleanup) and I'm posting the show from another location.

Welcome! The program today features a surprisingly small number of songs. Only 13, but I hope you will agree that they are all very good. We were fortunate to have a couple of requests from long-time listeners that added to the show. These include a wonderful song from Sam Mangwana & L'African All Stars and two tracks from two different albums featuring singer Gina Efonge. YOUR requests always add flavor and spice, so please keep them coming! We start off with a song from one of Kosmos Moutouari's European albums, but the program proceded in an ad-lib fashion from there with most songs coming from vinyl. Included are a rare songs by Minzoto Wella Wella and Zaiko Langa-Langa a that'll knock your socks off . The program ended up with a very nice song from Roga Roga's new solo CD. You are always welcome to enjoy the music on Ambiance Congo. I hope that you will really enjoy this edition. There are some real gems played this time around that you won't want to miss. I try to make that a part of every show, but please believe that I think it's specially true here.

There were numerous requests to hear the title song from Bana Modja's album Maya Tu, so I have that for you along with nice tracks from Celi Bitshou, Orchestre S.B.B. and Shakara Gagna-Gagna.

Our friend Apurva will be pleased to hear at least a couple of cuts that feature guitarist Rigo Star Bamundele. He masterfully adapts to as many different genres of Congolese music as there are songs presented. I may not have given him adequate credit every time he appears, but he is acknowledged already in the songs by his fellows.

I am happy to thank Samba Mapangala and his management for making it possible for me to feature the USA premiere of his new album. It's GREAT!

Welcome!
Again the program features a mix of older and newer music with an emphasis on the classic sounds.
Hopefully you will find a few new discoveries and warm up to your favorites.
I enjoyed hearing again the wonderful snippets of Tabu Ley, ZAO and others in Maika Munan's song as well as the flute in the songs by M'Pongo Love and Ikomo "Djo-Djo" Ingange.
I gotta add this:
There are a good number of songs on this program in which the singer praises other singers. Jpson calls out Madilu, Madilu calls out Shiko Mawatu and others and so on from there.
It was cool I think to add the Vata Mombasa song at the end. COOL song in which we hear Canta Nyboma Mwandido sing at least two distinct parts.

There has been so very much talk about new music lately and so very much of that talk has been negative!
Today I present all new music for your listening pleasure. And I do mean for your listening PLEASURE! I have found a lot to enjoy in today's Congolese music and I hope that you have also.

There is some good variety in this program's set list. Not everything is exactly to my personal taste, but almost everything is something I've spun -and will probably continue to spin- at home or in my car again and again and again.

I cannot count the number of requests I've received here and seen on other sites. I sometimes wonder if I own the only copy of this magnificent album. Recorded and produced in Gabon, this Congolese LP is an album worthy of the great music found on Global Groove, World Service and Oro blogs to name a few.

Magnificent? Yes. It is perfectly composed, orchestrated, arranged and performed.

You will love the incredible choreography of belted-out, from-the-belly throaty vocals of Mavuela Somo with two guitars in the lead and wild, hit-the-right-note-every-time synths. I would love to know who these musicians are! Some truly great sebenes here!

Welcome!
An historic concert was held in Belgium on Friday night that celebrated 50 years of Congolese independence and 50 years of Congolese music.
For those of us who could not attend, I played a number of the original versions of the songs in the original set list for the concert, songs chosen and performed by artists still with us today to represent the rich history of Congolese music.
The concert was over four hours long and and I had only half that time for the program. I hope to give you here a taste of the inspiring music these artists had lined up to give their audience a night to remember. The songs here are all be songs available on CD in hopes that you will be able to get them for yourselves.
Thanks to Dr. Frank for posting the concert's playlist, the playlist from which this program has been assembled.

I've been told that the concert did not adhere strictly to the tracklist assembled beforehand

The program this afternoon started off with a couple of tracks featuring the voice of Madilu System then moved on to some firey sebenes from Defao, Ruffin Nkoy Loola (featuring vocals by Aimelia Lias) and Felix Wazekwa.

In the mid-1980s there were a number of good African record shops in the Washington DC area. When this album came out, it was played frequently, and at high volume, in all of the stores. I bought a copy the moment I first heard the looping guitar riffs of Popolipo and Petit Poisson and funky basslines of Oncle Bapius and Felly Eloko.

Featuring an all-star Zaiko lineup, the songs on this record were strikingly original and hold their appeal to this day. L'AMOUR C'EST DIVIN remains a longtime favorite of mine that I can play again and again.

I have only one other album by Klay, one he recorded with Dindo Yogo. Otherwise, I know very little about him. If you know anything about Klay, please share what you know!

Welcome to Ambiance Congo!

Thanks for joining me for two hours of Congolese music. Despite a lot of talk to the contrary, there has been a long and wonderful history of songs led by women in Lingala music. There aren't a lot of women on the scene today, but there is some amazing talent amongst the few. On this program you'll get to hear many women sing both lead and chorus.
Two hours is not enough time to cover the subject, so I'll have to revisit this some day. Your suggestions are welcome as comments here.

Samba Mapangala & Virunga at Folk Fest, Richmond

Here are a few shots from the first of three concerts.

Samba was in fine form and he and and his band were very well received!
Samba was joined on stage by a well-chosen group of talented musicians, most of whom are Congolese or East Africans who now reside here in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Misha Mfum (ex - Empire Bakuba).
Misha has a strong voice and a stage presence that rivals just about anyone.
He tells me that he'd like to reissue his solo album Empire Ambiance. Personally, I think he has the talent to consider making an album of new material.

Getry Mavambu (ex - Afrisa).
This veteran drummer lays it DOWN, keeping the beat with astonishing variety and flair.

"Nabtry Dancers" Francine and Grace.
While Francine's ambitions are for a singing career in another genre of music, Grace Haukwa is a talented, joyful and enthusiastic dancer. I'm willing to wager that she could perform with just about any Congolese or Kenyan band. She certainly knows the steps and the moves!

Guitarists John Bashengezi and Siama Matuzungidi.

Siama (original Virunga, ex - Shama Shama and Orchestre Cavacha) tells me that he played the original Cherie Kadetti with Dona Mobeti. He's a highly skilled veteran musician.

I had never heard John play before, but I guess I have missed out!
Wow! The man is GOOD! I think that he and Misha Mfum should consider
that album of new material...I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I regret that I did not get a decent picture of bassist Ali Mgawe.
You can ctach a glimpse of him in the group shot at the top of the page.
I regret that I did not get a decent picture of Cheryl Kramer.
You can catch a small glimpse of her, on keyboard, in the photo above of Samba with the Nabtry Dancers.

Welcome to Ambiance Congo!

If you live here in Richmond or you can get to Richmond for Folk Fest http://www.richmondfolkfestival.org/docs/event_schedule.html you will be treated to three performances by Samba Mapangala and Orchestra Virunga.

Samba Mapangala was born in Matadi, Congo and began his musical career in Kinshasa. On tour in the eastern part of the country in the mid-70s, Samba and others from the group Orchestre Saka Saka left to begin work in Uganda as Les Kinois or, roughly, "The Kinshasa Guys". In 1977, they moved to Nairobi, Kenya and in 1981 started Orchestra Virunga. It was at that time that Samba and his band recorded the album that has gained and kept international attention, IT'S DISCO TIME WITH SAMBA MAPANGALA & ORCH VIRUNGA (aka MALAKO DISCO). This set of songs was reissued on the Earthworks label as VIRUNGA VOLCANO, an album listed as one of the 100 "must-have world music releases" of all time.

We start the program today with a track from Samba Mapangala and Virunga's new LIVE ON TOUR release, a song by Les Kinois and one from MALAKO. After that, we talk a bit with Samba on the phone and we are honored to be able to premiere a new song of his.

The second hour of the program features more songs from Congolese musicians and groups who made their mark in Kenya - Baba Gaston, Les Noirs, Les Mangelepa, Orchestra Viva Makale, Super Mazembe and more.
