Ambiance Congo: September 30, 2018

WELCOME!
I have been recently introduced to the fine albums of the Planet Ilunga label, and what fine albums they are indeed! The newest, a collection of great singles by master guitarist Docteur Nico, features many rare songs that I have never heard before and I am pleased to be able to let you sample one of those today. Like their previous release of O.K. Jazz singles, the album contains a lot of deep research and fascinating information in the package. I'll try to obtain more Planet Ilunga albums for the future! I hope that you will support them as I have by buying their albums, playing them often at home and recognizing them for the treasures that they are!
I've also found available a number of newly reissued singles of music from the 1960s and 1970s by Samba Mascott and N'goma Jazz, two of which you'll hear today.
And speaking of singles, we also have two wonderful newer singles, one by Felix Wazekwa with Lutumba Simaro.
Just a note about one more song: the one from Bouhlos Loupino and Kester Emeneya features guitarist Souza Vangu of Youlou Mabiala's Kamikaze Loningisa band, something that I didn't mention during program.
Enjoy!

Ambiance Congo: September 16, 2018

WELCOME!
I have another mix with a lot of varied music today.
There's a song from Les Bantous de la Capitale veteran Passy Ngongo Mermans along with some other tunes from Brazzville groups Extra Musica, Trio Ce.Pa.Kos and Mando Negro Kwala-Kwa.
A song from the first Terre Sacree album featuring Roga Roga and Doudou Copa also goes toward that side of the river.
We also hear from an album that is supposed to feature Dr. Nico on guitar along with l'Orchestre Bana Mambo, but the guitar work sounds a lot more like that of Diblo Dibala than that of Dr. Nico.
That's not a bad thing, but I thought that the album label might be wrong. So I did some research and found that Bana Mambo was a band that once worked with  Soki Vangu, Kanda Bongo Man and Diblo Dibala. Listening again to this album, I hear Diblo called out.
Also for you, thanks to friend in Europe for this rare treat, we have a cut from the album De Palenque a Matonge of Dizzy Mandjekou with Malage de Lugendo and the Colombian combo Ale Kuma.
Enjoy!

Ambiance Congo: September 2, 2018

WELCOME!

Welcome to another edition of Ambiance Congo. If you are returning or a new listener, I am happy that you have chosen to listen to two hours of Congolese music.
Every two weeks, I try to play examples of diverse Congolese music, but I tend to play the music that I like and that is the great older music, especially music recorded in the 1970s and 1980s. Today is no exception. Check out the track from Franco's Ekaba Kaba!
I do try to play new music as well and many times I bring it along, but I always seem to end up playing mostly the Congolese music of the past. In my humble opinion, this is some of the greatest music ever recorded.
If you would like to hear more new music, just send me a comment with a request and I'll be happy to spin that for you.
This time I have two requests, one for a song by the great Theo Blaise Kounkou and another by King Kester Emeneya. The Emeneya song is from a session recorded in Japan in which some of the original versions of the songs were made with Papa Wemba's band on the Don Dass label, but this one is the pure heaven of  the King's Victoria Eleison.
We also have a song from Tabu Ley's first album recorded in France, a killer song with Josky Kiambukuta in Orchestre Continental and a great track by Verckys and l'Orchestre Veve.
I had a moment of love for the guitar work of Master Mwana Congo, one with  Theo Blaise and one with Didi Rapheal Louvila that I hope that you'll enjoy.

Ambiance Congo: August 19, 2018

WELCOME!

Time to dig into the racks again! I had little opportunity to put together a program this time and had only chosen the first three songs. Everyone loves the original BCBG and Le Tempte du Desert has somehow avoided my tracklists until now. Black Story was popular in Belgium in the 90s, but I've found that few this side of the Atlantic have ever heard their music. You can find more on these pages if you search.
Somehow it seemed that a song from Pepe Kalle and something older by Koffi Olomide just might fit with that newer music.
So...on Sunday, I just packed up a crate with LPs and CDs and went off to the station to spin an ad lib set.
I did remember that Dave in UK had requested a certain song by Minzoto Wella-Wella so I was sure to have that LP in the box.

I hope that you'll enjoy!
