Ambiance Congo: January 1, 2012

Happy New Year!
This program, broadcast on New Year's day, 2012 marks the beginning of the seventh year for Ambiance Congo on WRIR in Richmond, Virginia USA. We start off with an appropriate song, requested by our friend Shad (aka Soukousman), called 7 ANS by Sec Bidens.
Your requests for music by Master Mwana Congo, Youlou Mabiala, Viva La Musica, Lubumbashi Stars and more add to the variety and quality of today's selections. Many thanks to everyone who requested songs for the show!
Just for fun and to illustrate how much variety and quality there is to be found in Congolese music, I've thrown in three very different songs with the same title.
Here are some album covers from the first program of 2012.

You are invited to download the program here:

Ambiance Congo: November 20, 2011

WELCOME!
Recent trends and fashions in Congolese music have led to a lot of commentary about how bad these trends and fashions have been. The guitar-led sebene has been a rare element in new music, a lot of new albums are filled with yawn-inducing ballads and songs with incomprehensible tempo changes, noisy atalaku calls and growling, mabanga-filled lyrics. These are all valid complaints, but not all new music should be readily dismissed and there are, in fact, quite a number of good songs and good albums being made.
On today's progam, I've tried to present for you some examples of the good new songs out there on the Congo music scene, songs produced in the last year or two. For variety and comparison, the show starts and ends with some older tracks, most presented originally some ten to twenty years ago.
I'd love to hear your comments on today's selections. Thanks for listening!
Here the covers of a few of the albums you'll hear this time around on Ambiance Congo.

Ambiance Congo: November 6, 2011

WELCOME!nce again to Ambiance Congo.
I hope that you'll enjoy the program. In my on-going efforts to provide you with the best quality that I can, I've tried a new way to record the program, while presenting it live on air, for those of you who are unable to listen live.
As this was a bit of an experiment, the first couple of songs may be amped up a bit too high, but overall it sounds very good to me. Please let me know what you think! If your feedback tells me that this is an improvement, I will do my best to continue with it this way in the future.

As usual, today's show is a mix of older music and new releases.

Here are some of the album covers.

Ambiance Congo: October 9, 2011

WELCOME!
The program two weeks ago was presented during the final hours of our fund drive (WRIR is a non-profit community radio station staffed by about 150 volunteers) and the show was chock full of talk about that. More than half of the program was talking points and recognition of donors. It was a good show, but I did not feel it was a good enough program to post out of context.
You can still donate to WRIR if you like Ambiance Congo and if you are so inclined. Your support for Ambaince Congo and alternative radio programming is appreciated! Just go to http://www.wrir.org/ and click the convenient Donate tab. Thank you!

On to this edition:
Thanks again to all who asked for requests! As always, your requests are more than welcome and they allow input from a lot more people than just me as to what is worthwhile in both classic and modern Congolese music.
I jumped around in time to arrange the program to fit the requests and to air a variety of styles and trends. I hope that you'll enjoy listening.

Ambiance Congo: September 11, 2011

WELCOME!

While I am presenting these programs, I do not get to listen to the music. I am busy cueing up songs, talking to listeners on the phone and responding to forum and blog posts. All of that is a lot fun and it is informative and educational for me.
I do listen, much later, to the podcasts before I put the programs here. I have to say it: This one is a pretty darn good show. I enjoyed the selections, many of which came from you, very much.
I hope that you will agree! Here are the covers for some of today's albums.

New music, older music, a little bit of everything for everyone!

WELCOME!

Many apologies for the delay in posting the program. The hurricane that struck here last week pretty much destroyed the power grid and konocked out much internet service.

I have finally gotten an opportunity to take a break from work and from the chainsaw (storm cleanup) and I'm posting the show from another location.

I hope you will enjoy it! Joyce, Madilu's medley was included just for you! Please let me know if you have any other requests.

Here are some album covers. I hope I have not posted any of these previously. It's pretty hard to check on that right now.
