Ambiance Congo: November 1, 2015

Welcome to Ambiance Congo radio program.
I always find joy in this music, no matter what the circumstances.
I missed posting for the last program (October 18, 2015), but you can listen to that program (as well as this one) at Radio4all. It was recorded during WRIR's Fall Fund Drive, so I tried to play music that would spark some activity in the donation department.

I brought another big crate of records and discs along with no idea what was going to spin...and it came out great. I've been checking a lot of my older albums to see what songs I've missed over the past 10 years at WRIR. Some of these songs, such as those sung by M'Bilia Bel and M'Pongo Love, come from those older records.

Ambiance Congo: October 4, 2015

Welcome once again to Ambiance Congo radio program.
Starting off with a song in tribute to the late Fidele Zizi, an appropriate song!
Next we have a great track from Sam Mangwana to keep you going. I love those Eddy'Son albums. Someday, just for fun, I should do a program of just Eddy Gustave productions. That'd feature some great music and we'd get to hear lots and lots of guitar by Master Mwana Congo.
And while on the subject of guitar, there's a little sequence in this week's program where you'll get to hear a few tracks from solo albums by a few of the modern greats such as Rigo Star, Beniko Popolipo and Manuaku Waku.

Welcome!
Being totally unprepared always seems to be a good thing. Well, almost always. This week it turned out fairly well!
I always panic at the thought, placing large numbers of LPs and CDs into a crate at the very last minute  and hauling that crate to the station with great trepidation, jammining one CD after another into the car's disc player on the way over in a wild attempt to find the right song to start...
But then when it does start, I always find that the music is all so good that I can play ANYTHING and the next song will just come from listening to what's on and flipping through that crate.
Yup. That was this edition of Ambiance Congo.

Ambiance Congo: September 6, 2015

Welcome!
Labor Day weekend brings you two hours of 1960s Congolese music for your listening and dancing pleasure!
The era was before my initial exposure to any popular music that was not heard on the radio in USA.
It was the era just after Congolese independence and the music, fueled by a rich period in its development in the 1950s, exploded in style, in the number of bands or "orchestres" and exploded out of the Congos into popularity across Sub-Saharan Africa, to the Caribbean and beyond.
Fortunately, a lot of this music was recorded and issued first on 45s and then on LPs, reissued on CD from the 90s to now.
Today we have almost all music from the 1960s although there are a couple that may be from the early 70s.
Some is from original vinyl, some from CDs. The French African and Sonodisc labels issued many compilations and we'll hear a number of songs from those.

The first song is a Beatles cover. I wasn't going to play it, but the show before Ambiance Congo on this day was all Beatles covers. I played it for the other DJ as he had never heard anything like it before.

I think this is a particularly good program. I enjoyed putting it together on the fly in the studio - I try to play what I'd play for friends in my living room.
