Ambiance Congo: May 15, 2015

Welcome to Ambiance Congo!
This time I am with a special guest who has chosen many of the songs you will hear.

Alan Brain is a Peruvian filmmaker who spent almost 8 years in the Democratic Republic of Congo filming for the United Nations. He was hired to document UN efforts to curtail human rights abuses in Eastern DRC, but he also made documentaries that highlighted positive aspects of Congolese culture, society and individuals.

Alan has a deep love for the Congolese people and a great appreciation for them, for their culture and for their music. Although he traveled the country, he was based in Kinshasa where, among other things like performing as a singer in a salsa band with Congolese musicians. He began working on a feature documentary about the golden era of Congolese Rumba called "The Rumba Kings".

The film includes interviews with such living legends as Lutumba Simaro from the OK Jazz, Nedule Montswet aka Papa Noel, Guvano from Tabu Ley band, Faugus Izeidi from African Fiesta, Moniania Roitelet from Rock a Mambo, Verckys Kiamanguana from Orchestre Veve, Pepe Fely Manuaku from Zaiko Langa Langa, Maproco and Bikounda from Wendo Kolosoi band, Nkuka Mathiu from African Jazz, and many others. A good sample of his documentary is a short film he made with the last 2 survivors of the legendary Congolese Rumba band African Jazz of Grand Kalle that played in the Congo independence in Belgium and that composed the famous song "Independance Cha Cha Cha".
You can check the trailer for "The Rumba Kings" here:

It was my pleasure to have Alan on the show, we talked history and music, some politics and opinions.
Comments are always welcome!

Ambiance Congo: May 1, 2016

Welcome to Ambiance Congo!
Today we honor our late star, Papa Wemba, with a small selection of some of his music. There is no way to pay tribute to all of hm in away that covers everything he did, all of his bands and all of his hits. I have chose instead to play some of the great songs that don't usually make it onto western playlists, to feature some of the many great collaborations and other bands beside his own that he contributed to. I am particularly fond of the song LOMAMI with N'Yoka Longo and the late Bimi Ombale.
There are couple of your requests included as well.

Ambiance Congo: April 17, 2016

Welcome!
This post is very late and I apologize to those who have been waiting.
Sometimes the responsibilities of life take precedence over pleasure!
The program featured here was recorded during WRIR's semi-annual fund drive, so the songs were chosen to spark interest an a diverse audience.
THANK YOU to those who did listen live and THANK YOU to those who chose to donate. You still can. Just visit www.wrir.org and click on the DONATE button to help keep these programs coming.

It is with a very heavy heart that I note today the passing of the great Papa Wemba, Kuru Yaka, Pap de Sap.
I'll be playing a number of his songs next time and your requests will make for a better program than if I were to choose all songs myself. Please use the Requests link or comment here.
I go dark on images today as a "moment of silence" for Papa Wemba.

Ambiance Congo: April 3, 2016

Welcome!
I want to extend a warm welcome to Tim who is working and listening in Mongolia, where Ambiance Congo is"a beacon of sanity in the digital world". He requested the Choc Stars song included here today and I was happy to spin it for him! Where are YOU, and what would YOU like to hear next time? A song? A theme? A shout to your favorite person?
These recent weeks I have been immersed in work, a good thing when one is self-employed, so I came to the studio with no plans other than to play Tim's request and a big box of LPs and CDs.
I am truly blessed to be playing Congolese music, because almost everything is wonderful worthy of a listen.
I hope that you will agree!
