Some cool tunes this week, David, many thanks.
ReplyDeleteIs the rest of that Orchestre Sacramento CD any good? I never heard of them before but I was quite impressed.
Good to see that Stern's have made an effort & put out a stylish Grand Kalle compilation. All credit to them but I'd love them to do the same for some of the less important, but (arguably) more interesting, Congo bands.
Anyone for a 2-CD Orchestre Sinza retrospective? Maybe with the green pit viper and guitar as the front cover?
Who in their right mind wouldn't buy that on sight, unheard?
Anyway, on another subject, have you got the new Karmapa album yet?
David:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great show, especially the killer Nyanga track! I appreciated the shout out.
I heard Nyanga chant Malawi, which is cool because I have visited that wonderful country.
Once again, thanks for all you do.
Geoffrey from Philly
Hi Dave. The Orchestre Sacramento is good compared to a lot of new CDs. The singing is not the best, but the sebenes are good. I remember Martin Sinnock once commenting, in a forum post, on the current state of affairs in Lingala music, saying something to the effect that "now all we're left with is the likes of Orchestre Sacramento". I happen to like the CD going back to it. When I bought it I wasn't so keen on it, but given a lot of choices these days, it's pretty darn good.
ReplyDeleteA Sinza set would be cool indeed! Love that band!
I have not heard the new Karmapa CD. Have you?
Geoffrey, the Santa Nyanga album is excellent and it really is too bad it's impossible to get. Rigo Star's guitar is really shiny on the disc!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a copy yet - it's supposed to be winging its way to me sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteI'll let you know if he's put one of his noisy 20-minute epics on it, I know you like them.
Have you seen the cover, though? Looks like he's got himself a pair of MC Hammer's old pants.
I've listened to a couple of songs on youtube. One good song has been out there since 2009. I wonder if they will cover it up with naming names on the final version.
ReplyDeleteHi David,
ReplyDeleteA fantastic show. Thanks for the Rigo Star show in the Santa Nyanga piece. I also liked Huit Kilo's brilliant fretwork in the Emma Vuiti song. Apurva from Pune, India.
Yes, Apurva. Huit Kilos outdid himself on that one! Thanks for your nice comment.
