I could have played a lot of really great Congolese Christian music today. But I didn't. I decided instead to "resurrect" some great songs by some of the great artists who have passed. So that they may live beyond the grave.
I wanted to start with Grand Kalle or Jean-Serge Essous, so I opted for both, then, as I have always admired him as a saxophonist & composer, something from an Essous solo album and a track by him recorded posthumously by his comrades of Les Bantous de la Capitale.
Then some Franco, Docteur Nico, Pepe Kalle...
But there are some good new songs here as well. My favorite is PROLONGATION by KaR mapa, in which he calls out Rochereau, Wendo, Franco and others.
We end up on another continent with a cut from the excellent Japanese band Yoka Choc. Their Congolese music is amazingly true to form. A salute to them!!
I hope that you will enjoy! Thank you for listening and for your requests and comments.

Thank you David - downloading the show now! Apurva from Pune, India.
ReplyDeleteWell, I knew about Japanese reggae but I had no idea there was Japanese Congolese rumba too! Highly entertaining; thanks for shedding a bit of light on this mysterious sub-genre, David.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy, Apurva!
ReplyDeleteDave, I don't know how many Japanese groups play Congolese music and sing in Lingala. But Yoka Choc is a very good band!
