We start with a song from the late Papa Lutumba.
From there, we are jumping around in time and styles to keep you jumping around.
Toward the end of the second hour, I have added a song from an album I have sought for years: KINSHASA! by Kawende et ses Copains. I have another LP on that same small Swiss Label that I have thoroughly enjoyed for decades, but could never find any others. Thanks to John at Likembe for giving us all a chance to hear a song from this one. Many say that this is not what you'd expect and is not in the mainstream of Congolese music, and this is true in many aspects, but listen to Franco's NALINGAKA YO YO TE and judge for yourself.
I hope that you will enjoy this edition of Ambiance Congo.

Hello Dj!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate everything you have done with Ambiance Congo as I listen ti it every other week! I was wondering if you could play this song this song on the next Ambiance Congo broadcast. Its seems to be from the Wabalonzo CD "Mfumu Ngengi" from 2007, but I could be wrong.
The song starts at 3:08:23 and ends around 3:11:11.

It would be great if you could play this song, but if you are unable to, that is totally fine!
Thanks for the hard work!
Bernard Forson
For many years, Tabu Ley was credited with imbuing his style of Rumba with contemporary "Western" influences. While Franco and OK Jazz were called "traditional" and more conservative. However, Franco began to explore the limits of Rumba Odemba by taking flight from TPOK Jazz into collaborations with different (often smaller) orchestrations/groups. Nalingaka Yo Yo Te is a precursor to Mario, to La Vie Des Hommes, to Attention Na Sida. Ironically, Franco and Tabu Ley finally come together from their individual paths in 1982-83 collaborating on Omana Wapi & Suite Lettres. Perhaps the finest elevation of this collaboration, of sophistication married with pure Rumba comes with Benediction when Franco and Michelino bring the best of both bands/traditions into Point Carre and the other 3 great songs. This album features song of the best sebenes in all of Congalese Rumba.
