Ambiance Congo for August 15, 2010

Welcome!

I hope that you'll enjoy this edition of Ambiance Congo. Please feel free to comment on the program or the songs or to make a request for a future show.

This week, I was reminded that it has been three years since the passing of Madilu Bialu, three years that we miss the voice of the great Madilu System.

So we start out with three songs by with Madilu. One from his often requested Pouvoir album, his most famous duet with Franco and one from his first band, Bakuba Mayopi.

After that I offer a number of classics and songs from some of the new CDs out there.

To give you an idea of what you will hear, here are a few album covers from this edition of Ambiance Congo.

You are invited to download a copy of the program here:

Ambiance Congo for August 1, 2010

Welcome to Ambiance Congo!
This time I had the honor of filling a good number of your requests. Not surprising to notice, all of these requests were for older music.
Thrown in are a few of my own choices and songs from a couple of the better new releases that I've received as well.
As a rule, your requests and suggestions always make for better programs and this one is no exception to that rule! Play it often, play it loud!

Many requests for songs on Ambiance Congo are submitted via English language African music forums.
Check the posts on these forums and check out the forums themselves.

Ambiance Congo for July 18, 2010

Welcome!
An historic concert was held in Belgium on Friday night that celebrated 50 years of Congolese independence and 50 years of Congolese music.
For those of us who could not attend, I played a number of the original versions of the songs in the original set list for the concert, songs chosen and performed by artists still with us today to represent the rich history of Congolese music.
The concert was over four hours long and and I had only half that time for the program. I hope to give you here a taste of the inspiring music these artists had lined up to give their audience a night to remember. The songs here are all be songs available on CD in hopes that you will be able to get them for yourselves.
Thanks to Dr. Frank for posting the concert's playlist, the playlist from which this program has been assembled.
Thanks to Dr. Frank also for this pre-concert photo of a number of the artists present.

I've been told that the concert did not adhere strictly to the tracklist assembled beforehand
so I may not have presented the exact songs actually played.
Find out more about this concert, see reviews by friends who attended, see many good photos and find links to some live footage, please visit:

Welcome!

This time around, there are a few CDs and newer songs in the mix, but it's mostly older music on vinyl. It's always a pleasurs for me to put this kind of a program together. I fill a crate or two with LPs, throw in a few CDs and head to the station. I have a couple of starters lined up, but the program makes itself and never really ends up where I might have thought!

I hope that you enjoy listening to the mix at least as much as I enjoy spinning it.

ETUMBU

In the mid-1980s there were a number of good African record shops in the Washington DC area. When this album came out, it was played frequently, and at high volume, in all of the stores. I bought a copy the moment I first heard the looping guitar riffs of Popolipo and Petit Poisson and funky basslines of Oncle Bapius and Felly Eloko.

Featuring an all-star Zaiko lineup, the songs on this record were strikingly original and hold their appeal to this day. L'AMOUR C'EST DIVIN remains a longtime favorite of mine that I can play again and again.

I have only one other album by Klay, one he recorded with Dindo Yogo. Otherwise, I know very little about him. If you know anything about Klay, please share what you know!
