Ambiance Congo: January 11, 2015

Welcome! We are off to a decent start this new year with lots of requests and, as always, more music not played before on this program. I always try to show the breadth, diversity and consistent quality of Congolese music by giving you a chance to hear something different every time. This time, I was asked to play something from an album I do not have, so I looked it up and converted the song from YouTube.
The song, requested by our friend Apurva, is LE JEUNE BOUCHER from BANGO OYO BAYE,
the last CD recorded by the ever magnificent Choc Stars. I would love to get a copy of this fine
album, but, alas, I cannot find one anywhere.
Roxy Tshimpaka's solo guitar on that song is just one example of the great guitar you'll hear on today's program as we hear from Popolipo, Rigo Star, Olivier Tshimanga and others.

Ambiance Congo: December 28, 2014

Welcome!
This last program of 2014 was put together live in the studio. As a big surprise to me, coming in with just a big crate of LPs, 45s and CDs and no real plan resulted in a very fine program! What a great way to end another year of Ambiance Congo. I hope that you will agree that we went out with a big bang.
What will 2015 bring? Next week marks the start of the TENTH year of Ambiance Congo on WRIR!
Your requests and comments are always welcome.

Ambiance Congo: December 14, 2014

Welcome!
Welcome to another program of great Congolese music. This time I've again started with some wonderful older music and ended up with new music. It's another show where a big box of CDs and LPs made the program by ear. There's  no end to how many times this is possible. Congolese music offers incredible diversity and possibility. I hope that you'll agree!
If you love what you hear, please let me know. Comments and requests are always welcome!

Ambiance Congo: November 30, 2014

WELCOME!

Today's program starts with a look at the evolution of music in the 70s, focusing primarily on the influence of Verckys and those, like Franco and James Brown, who had an influence on him. We also have a couple of songs by the late Tabu Ley Rochereau, who passed one year prior to the presentation of this program, as well as songs by Lipua-Lipua, Empire Bakuba, Choc Stars and Zaiko Langa-Langa.
Thanks to all who requested songs!
