WELCOME!

We start with a song from the late Papa Lutumba.
From there, we are jumping around in time and styles to keep you jumping around.

Toward the end of the second hour, I have added a song from an album I have sought for years: KINSHASA! by Kawende et ses Copains. I have another LP on that same small Swiss Label that I have thoroughly enjoyed for decades, but could never find any others. Thanks to John at Likembe for giving us all a chance to hear a song from this one. Many say that this is not what you'd expect and is not in the mainstream of Congolese music, and this is true in many aspects, but listen to Franco's NALINGAKA YO YO TE and judge for yourself.

Today in Part A we have music that, for the most part, was recorded around the year 2000. Late 90s., early 00s. In Part B we end up the show with some music from 80s vinyl and even an OK Jazz song originally recorded in 1957.

Between Part A and Part B, we have 3 very different songs sung by Malage de Lugendo: one each from albums of Benz Petrole, Baloji and Choc Langa-Langa.

Welcome!
In memoriam, in recognition, in celebration of Simaro Lutumba
I dedicate  the greater part of this program to the late Papa Lutumba (9 March 1938 – 30 March 2019).
To those of us who have listened to and loved Congolese music for decades, his name stands with such other late heroes as Franco, Docteur Nico, Tabu Ley, and Grand Kalle. He was a powerful and beautiful presence in our lives.
Although he was best known for his contributions to T.P. O.K. Jazz which he joined in 1961, he also worked with other legends such as M'Pongo Love and Pepe Kalle. He assumed the leadership of T.P. O. K. Jazz after the passing of Franco and later formed the formidable Bana OK - a great band for which  I sadly omitted to include at least one representative song in this program.
You may find many, many of his songs in the Ambiance Congo Audio Archives (see Links) under his name and the names of T.P. O.K. Jazz, Bana O.K. and more by searching those programs.
Although he has passed, he will live forever!
I have included on this page the album covers for recordings of the songs that he penned and contributed to that were featured in this edition of the show. Other songs here are, for reference, by contemporary bands and artists.

Let us begin with a great track by Pepe Ndombe and Afrizam. Ndombe Opetum worked with both Tabu Ley and Franco. After the passing later of le Grand Maitre Franco, he was an instrumental singer with both TP OK Jazz and with Bana OK, keeping the tradition alive.
Next, we have two popular songs of Tabu Ley, EBOUE by Dino Vangu and KINSHASA by Reddy Amisi followed by the song S’IL TE PLAIT by Toussaint Lyndolhi in the style of Tabu Ley.
